What are the chances?

This morning while making my coffee at work, I noticed that I had polished off an entire pint of half n' half. IN THREE DAYS!!!

Side note: I now make my own coffee when I get to work in the morning, instead of spending $2.00 every day at the coffee shop. Brook is loving this new money-saving technique of mine!

I mentioned to my co-worker that, in the past 3 days, I had consumed 640 calories and 32 grams of saturated fat-worth of half n' half...that coupled with the pan of brownies that I single-handedly gobbled down in 2 1/2 days, you'd think my cholesterol would be through the roof!!

"Are these cravings that you've been having, Carrie? Will Finn and Reid be getting two siblings soon? ", my co-worker inquired.

After I stopped laughing hysterically, I wondered...What are the chances???

Then, while blog-surfing today during lunch, I noticed on Picklebums that the author had a sweet little chart of the statistics that answered my question!

Here are the numbers:

Chances of Having Two Sets of Twins
(w/ various zygosity combinations)
2 sets of fraternal twins 1 in 3,000
1 set of fraternal twins/1 set of identical twins 1 in 10,000
2 sets of identical twins 1 in 70,000

Keeping in mind that Reid and Finn are monozygotic (identical) twins, my chances of having another set of identical twins are 1 in 70,000. But, my chances of having a set of fraternal twins are only 1 in 10,000. Tres interessant!

And, no. I'm NOT pregnant. As much as the grandparents would love another grandkid (or two!) to spoil, we do want to keep what little is left of our santity.

You're lucky. Since identicals are always a matter of chance, if you were to get pregnant again, you'd be no more likely than anyone in the general population to have twins.

Me, on the other hand, as a proven spontaneous double-dropper... I think the odds of me having a second set of fraternals is something horrifying like 5-12%. Good god. I mean, yes, that means the odds of me having a singleton are 88-95%, but that 12% scares the bejeesus out of me.

Three cheers for contraception. :-)

ah yes the numbers are comforting sometimes and scary at other times! I've had a singleton now so I am much surer that I am not doomed .. ahem.. I mean blessed to have twins every time I get pregnant!

Maybe the half-n-half & brownies are a reaction to stress?...you've had quite a week and a half!??!

As for the odds? Interesting, definitely! But I'm with Kate - comforting and scary all at once and with Goddess - each pregnancy is a new set of percentages.

Your co-worker has a great sense of humor!

What are the odds, indeed?! Of course, you forgot to factor in Murphy's Law. I personally met a lady with 2 sets of boy twins when I was in the hospital. Maybe trying for a girl isn't such a good idea...
